During its heyday, Fort Vancouver was the center of the British Hudson Bay Company's fur trading empire, maintaining 600 employees who explored more than 700,000 square miles in search of fur. Today, visitors to the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site can explore the site's world-class museum collection featuring more than two million historic artifacts, including numerous items related to the history of the U.S. military in the Northwest. Many reconstructed buildings show how the fort was designed and built, and some are furnished like they were in the 19th century when the fort was in use. The historic site is located across the street from the Pearson Airfield, just minutes from the Washington-Oregon border.
